Five seasons ago Plymouth Argyle and AFC Wimbledon were six leagues apart. However, the times have most certainly changed and few will be backing Plymouth to overcome the league football new boys, despite their 3/2 price.
Without a win since April, Argyle have also had a succession of off-the-pitch problems, with staff and players foregoing their wages in order for the club to continue to exist. Unfortunately for the Green Army, their on-pitch affairs haven’t been much better either, with a 4-1 home loss to Rotherham over the weekend proving particularly damaging. This defeat was put down to a lack of experience by manager Peter Reid – something that’s unlikely to have been remedied for tonight’s fixture.
For their part, AFC have shown promise in their early-season games despite two 3-2 losses and present reasonable value at 8/5. Backing them to take all three points using the free £25 bet provided for joining bwin.com would create a very handy win of £65 if successful.
This could well be worth a wager as Saturday’s 2-0 victory at Dagenham and Redbridge will have provided a massive boost and is bound to have been a relief for Dons boss Terry Brown. With this first win under their belt, expect AFC to look to play their usual brand of expansive football and go for the jugular against the Pilgrims.
Combine that with Argyle’s inability to keep a clean sheet in their first three competitive games and we could be in for a high-scoring fixture. With this in mind, betting on over 2.5 goals at 91/100 would seem sensible, while the more daring may choose to bet on more than 3.5 goals at a generous 11/5.
The possibility of plenty of goals also makes a straight draw bet (11/5) seem fairly unattractive, with results such as 1-1 (6/1), 2-2 (12/1) and 3-3 (40/1) becoming more appealing propositions.
Another market certainly worth looking at is the half-time result, with AFC Wimbledon priced at 11/5 to be in the lead and the Pilgrims at 21/10. While Argyle’s results have been poor so far this season, their half-time results have been even worse as they’ve failed to score in the opening 45 minutes of every competitive fixture so far. In contrast, AFC have found the net in the first 45 of every game this season so don’t be surprised to see them go into the interval with a lead.
