Bury have experienced a tricky first return to the third tier of English football since 2002, with Richie Barker’s side yet to win this season after a draw and a loss in their first two games.
Tonight, the Shakers face Gary Megson’s Sheffield Wednesday, who have been tipped by many for promotion and are currently 13/2 to win the League One title this year.
The Owls have had a mixed start to the campaign, with an opening day home victory over Rochdale offset by a loss away to Bournemouth, but are just about favourites to beat newly promoted Bury at 3/2, with the hosts at 33/20 and the draw at 21/20.
This is the first league meeting between the sides since 1980, when Bury edged a 1-0 victory in an old Third Division clash at Gigg Lane. If you fancy history to repeat itself, bwin is offering odds of 33/4 on the same scoreline tonight. With the new loan signing of striker Kudus Oyenuga from Spurs, Bury cannot be written off entirely.
Both sides were prolific in the first half of games last year, scoring 28 goals apiece in the first 30 minutes of games, with Wednesday conceding 26 in the same period. Bury were in the midst of a confident promotion run in League Two at the time but last year’s free-scoring side are more than capable of transferring that form into the league above and odds of 21/4 on a 1-1 scoreline at half-time seem fairly generous.
A narrow win for Wednesday does seem like a likely outcome and bwin is offering good prices on the Owls taking home the points by the odd goal, with 1-0 (8/1) and 2-1 (9/1) scorelines offering decent options for football betting fans looking to cash in on an away success.
Bury will be hoping that lightning doesn’t strike twice after being tied with Carlisle 0-0 at half-time before going on to lose 2-0 last time out. However, the draw/Sheffield Wednesday selection in the half-time/full-time market is available at 5/1 and could well generate some interest.
