With little summer sun to enjoy, Cheltenham Town, MK Dons and Sheffield United could provide some midweek cheer with three away wins.
All three sides come into this fixture on the back of morale-boosting wins and there is every reason to suggest that the good feeling could continue on the road.
As part of the regular ‘Playing Away’ series, we will provide three top away win predictions from the latest League One and League Two fixtures.
And while backing Sheffield United, MK Dons or Cheltenham individually to win their respective fixtures will rightly prove popular, opting for a more adventurous treble punt at odds of just over 22/1 could add some spice to the proceedings on Tuesday evening (particularly with winnings of £466.56 available to anyone using bwin’s free £20 bet when registering).
With all the opening weekend’s League One and League Two action in mind, here is why our top trio all look good to record three midweek points.
Cheltenham Town to beat Torquay @ 11/5
This is something of a League Two grudge match, as these two sides last faced each other in the play-off semi-final last season. Cheltenham came out on top on both occasions, winning the home and away legs of the tie.
The visitors will be confident of finding the net again this time around, having scored four in their two games at Plainmoor last term.
Torquay, meanwhile, have endured a difficult start to the season after being thrashed 4-0 at home by Championship club Leicester City and then drawing 0-0 away to league new boys Fleetwood on Saturday,
In contrast, Cheltenham have hit the ground running, narrowly losing on penalties to League One side MK Dons in the Capital One Cup before enjoying a comfortable 2-0 win over Dagenham and Redbridge.
With history and form on their side, Cheltenham look good at odds of 11/5.
MK Dons to beat Bournemouth @ 17/10
Two teams expected to be in the hunt for promotion collide in this midweek fixture and MK Dons will travel to Bournemouth confident of claiming a win against the Cherries.
After all, Karl Robinson’s team did exactly that on their last visit to Dean Court with a priceless 1-0 win. A repeat could well be on the cards, with MK Dons heading into the game on the back of some formidable away form.
MK Dons went eight games unbeaten away from stadium:mk at the end of last season, including three consecutive victories in their final three fixtures on the road.
They have also made a good start to the current campaign, following a solid 2-0 win at home over Oldham. Bournemouth, meanwhile, struggled against a makeshift Portsmouth side, trailing for much of the game until Lee Barnard popped up with a leveller on 78 minutes.
MK Dons should pose an even bigger threat than Pompey and are well priced at 3/2 for the win.
Sheffield United to beat Coventry City @ 17/10
The gloom surrounding Coventry City shows no sign of abating just yet, with the Sky Blues limping to a distinctly underwhelming 1-1 draw with League One also-rans Yeovil Town last Saturday.
The draw represented the Midlands club’s seventh consecutive league game without a win, with manager Andy Thorn continuing to resemble a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders.
Worse could yet come with the visit of Sheffield United, who will be eager to continue their fine form from the previous campaign.
The Blades were unfortunate to miss out on a return to the Championship last year, losing in a gut-wrenching penalty shoot-out to Huddersfield Town in the play-off final. Danny Wilson’s men are among the favourites to go up and started the current campaign well with a solid 1-0 home win against Shrewsbury.
The victory means that the Blades have now lost just one of their last 15 league games, winning nine and drawing five along the way.
United have been in imperious form on the road too, having lost just one of their last seven away games in the league. Backing the Blades to put Coventry to the sword makes plenty of appeal at 17/10.
