With May upon us and another season drawing to a close, we must all start to think about a summer without any meaningful football (I don’t count the Confederations Cup as meaningful football) and plan how we are now going to spend our weekends.
Not a pleasant thought, I know. However, fear not: we still have a few weeks of superb action to look forward to and on Friday night, the League One play-off fixtures commence with a mouth-watering clash at Bramall Lane between Sheffield United and Yeovil Town.
On first viewing, it is certainly not an easy one to call.
Neither side enter the play-offs in blistering form but they will both be determined not to give anything away in the first instalment of this two-legged tie.
With that said, the home side, spurred on by more than 30,000 loyal Blades fans, will want to secure a lead before heading to the West Country on Bank Holiday Monday.
United are favourites to claim a priceless victory and can be backed at odds of 21/20 in bwin’s 3Way market.
Having played in the top flight only six seasons ago, many will expect the Yorkshire outfit to banish the heartache of last year’s dramatic shoot-out defeat by Huddersfield Town at Wembley and secure promotion to the Championship.
However, I am not tipping this outcome. Yeovil have certainly been one of the surprise packages this campaign and with nothing to fear and in some respects nothing to lose, I am going to take a punt on Gary Johnson’s side to upset the odds.
The Glovers only just survived relegation last year and at the beginning of the season were one of the favourites to face the drop to League Two.
But the side from Huish Park have shown no interest in following the script and a truly incredible effort saw them finish fourth in a very competitive campaign in England’s third tier.
Typically, you could say that travelling to a massive stadium for such a huge fixture will see an inexperienced Yeovil team crumble under the pressure.
Luckily for this Yeovil backer, though, and anyone else who is clever enough (crazy enough?) to follow my tip, the Glovers have already been victorious at Bramall Lane this season.
On their last visit to the home of the Blades in January, Johnson’s men came away with all three points, producing one of their greatest performances of the season in a superb 2-0 triumph.
A repeat of that scoreline is possibly a little optimistic, but for anyone who likes a long shot, it can be backed at odds of 33/2.
I prefer the look of 9/4 on a Yeovil win and will probably have a go on this price, but for the purposes of this article, I am going to cover my back slightly and tip Yeovil/Draw in the double chance market at 7/10.
First legs in the play-offs are often tight, cagey affairs and for those punters who like to sit on the fence, the draw is also priced at 9/4.
United fans will obviously hope these selections are disastrously wrong and they certainly cannot countenance a third season in League One.
However, this tipster is risking the wrath of the Blades by backing the Glovers to grasp this unexpected opportunity with both hands and put themselves in pole position to reach the play-off final at Wembley.
