Although at the dawn of deadline day the German midfielder Mesut “The Raven” Ozil had woken up determined he would be staying at Real Madrid, someone in the Arsenal, Real Madrid or Mesut Ozil organisations has convinced him otherwise, says Spanish daily Marca.
It now looks as though Arsenal fans’ agonising wait to find something in their shopping bags is over.
Ozil has made 104 appearances for the Spaniards, after joining in 2010 from Werder Bremen.
He has scored 19 goals for them and was considered to have been one of the club’s better players last season.
In his three full seasons with Madrid he was virtually a regular in the league and Champions League teams, which suggests a mixture of Gareth Bale and Carlo Ancelotti arriving has turned the lights out for him, rather than any performance or personal issues.
The departure of Ozil will also increase chatter about whether any other precious and expensively-acquired galacticos are about to fall from the Madrid nest.
Angel Di Maria and Sammy Khedira are two names which have been mentioned in rumour form throughout deadline day.
Real Madrid are not in the habit of letting their stars leave on the way up, but even with Ozil gone, Carlo Ancelotti faces a tough task narrowing a stellar squad down to 11 names each week and may give one or two a shove.
Arsenal meanwhile, are now fifth favourites at 16/1 to win the Premier League, and Ozil will presumably make his debut following the international break in the game at Sunderland.
