It has been a whirlwind 12 months for Malaga Club de Futbol. Catapulted into the spotlight by the investment of millions of Euros from their new Arab owners, the side from Andalucia finished fourth in the Primera Division last season, earning a place in the qualifying round of the Champions League in the process.
This summer the owners did their calculations and realised they may not have had quite as much money as they thought, necessitating the sale of the club’s two best players in Santi Cazorla and Salomon Rondon. Where there had been so much hope now only despondency abounds, yet the team have responded by recording an opening league win at Celta Vigo and an impressive 2-0 victory over Panathinaikos in the first leg of their Champions League play-off.
Had this been last season, the price of 4/5 for a Malaga win at home against Mallorca would certainly have been smaller, yet the upheaval in the summer means Manuel Pellegrini’s side are not quite the prospect they were. Nevertheless, that should not deter investment in a team that has displayed determination and ability in equal measure this season.
Last season only Real and Barca won more home matches than Malaga and La Rosaleda retains an air of intimidation for visiting teams.
Last season only Real Madrid and Barcelona won more home matches than Malaga and La Rosaleda retains an air of intimidation for visiting teams. Meanwhile Mallorca, as is their custom, were poor away from the island in the previous campaign, winning just five of their 19 games on the road.
So despite their problems off the pitch Malaga retain enough quality on it to overcome Mallorca, and the price of 4/5 on a home win looks to hold some considerable value.
