bwin’s Six of the Best promotion presents punters with a list of six fairly fancied teams. You decide how many will triumph, with the bidding starting at four but greater prizes on offer if you go higher.
There are two shortlists to pick from this week. One features Bayern Munich, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Real Madrid and Barcelona.
The other offers up Man Utd, Real Madrid, Bayern, Juventus, Marseille and Anderlecht.
It is the second combo that intrigues us, partly due to doubts about three of the teams in the first sextet – Liverpool, Arsenal and Barcelona must conquer Man Utd, Tottenham and Valencia – and also as the odds are plumper.
The next question is whether we play it safe with four or try for five? The comfort of four appeals most, partly because this is a first attempt and also because the 6/5 price is handsome enough. If you’re a bit braver, five can be snared at 11/2.
Of the six candidates, it is very difficult to envisage Real Madrid or Juventus erring.
Real host Athletic Bilbao, who they have beaten seven times in succession by an aggregate score of 28-4.
Juventus meanwhile are at home to a Lazio side that caused them a few problems last season yet they absolutely destroyed the Biancocelesti 4-0 in Rome a fortnight ago in the Supercoppa.
Bayern Munich should beat Chelsea in the UEFA Super Cup. Pep Guardiola’s desire to lift the trophy for the fifth time following two wins as both player and coach of Barcelona and his squad’s hunger to avenge their 2012 Champions League final defeat are powerful incentives.
Likewise, while it won’t be easy for Anderlecht against emerging Belgian force Zulte-Waregem, the champions’ run of four straight away league victories, scoring 13 in the process, is enough to get us on side.
If those four deliver, there is no need to fret over the outcome of Man Utd’s trip to Liverpool and Marseille’s top-of-the-table Ligue 1 joust with Monaco, though there is reason to trust both.
Pundits were similarly sceptical of Man Utd’s chances in their first away game at Swansea and they cantered to a 4-1 win in that, while Marseille have made a 100% start and haven’t lost to Monaco in four.
