Mallorca v Getafe (5pm)
Home win: 21/20 Draw: 11/5 Away win: 27/10
Betting tip: Mallorca have overcome an early-season wobble to climb into mid-table after going five matches without defeat. The islanders don’t lose very many at home, and coupled with Getafe’s iffy away form, this has got a Mallorca win written all over it. Neither score a hatful of goals so a Mallorca win with under 3.5 goals in the game at 8/5 shouldn’t be sniffed at.
Sporting Gijon v Espanyol (5pm)
Home win: 6/5 Draw: 11/5 Away win: 23/10
Betting tip: Gijon are on a decent little run at the moment, as displayed by commendable away wins at Vallecano and Mallorca over the last seven days. They’ve only lost two of their last nine and thier place in the relegation zone is only due to a hideous start to the season. Espanyol are a completely mixed bag but should be buoyant after last week’s 4-2 hammering of Atletico Madrid and look good enough to share the spoils here. The 1-1 draw is 13/2.
Athletic Club v Real Zaragoza (7pm)
Home win: 21/50 Draw: 13/4 Away win: 27/4
Betting tip: Bilbao are the side you’d want to put on your pools coupon. The Basque men have drawn seven of their fifteen games this season and four out of eight at home. They’re hard to beat, having lost only once in eleven La Liga games, and all that should be enough to get the better of a Zaragoza side who are slipping towards the Segunda at a rapid pace. Los Blanquillos have picked up just one point from their last eight games and they won’t be adding to that at the San Mames on Saturday. A multiple correct score of 1-0, 2-0 or 3-0 to Bilbao is 31/20.
Sevilla v Real Madrid (9pm)
Home win: 23/4 Draw: 17/5 Away win: 11/25
Betting tip: Madrid’s record run of 15 wins on the bounce (and scoring plenty of goals to boot) was abruptly halted in last week’s El Clasico but now it’s back to playing the merely mundane again. Jose Mournho’s men must put the Barca defeat to the back of their minds and try to remember to a fortnight previously, when they were swatting aside teams like Sevilla like flies off your San Miguel. Sevilla aren’t the side they were either and two wins from eight has seen them slip off the pace being set for the Champions League places. Normal service should be resumed and a multiple correct score of 2-1, 3-1 or 4-1 to Real looks the best option at 29/10.
Sunday, December 18th
Athletico Madrid v Real Betis (11am)
Home win: 1/2 Draw: 29/10 Away win: 23/4
Betting tip: Where to start with Atletico Madrid? The great pretenders? The clown princes? The accumulator-busters extraordinare? Atletico have rotated between winning and losing for the last seven games and it’s such inconsistency which threatens to again blight what should have been another promising season. Luckily enough, they’ve only got Real Betis, whose win over Valencia last weekend trebled their points return from the previous ten games. Atletico should* have enough to win this and if you’re either very brave or foolish, stick a couple on a multiple correct score of 2-1, 3-1 or 4-1 to the hosts at 31/10.
Granada v Levante (3pm)
Home win: 3/2 Draw: 11/5 Away win: 9/5
Betting tip: Granada’s little meandering run of five without defeat has been halted with defeats in the league and cup over the last week so it will be interesting to see how they pick themselves back up. Levante have lost four out of their last six but the fixtures haven’t been kind on that run. Wins over Sevilla and Gijon sandwiched with a defeat to Barca shows their real level and they can strengthen their Champions League push with the 9/5 win here.
Osasuna v Villarreal (5pm)
Home win: 21/20 Draw: 23/10 Away win: 13/5
Betting tip: Things just don’t get any better for Villarreal and if results go against them this weekend, last year’s fourth-placed team could find themselves spending Christmas in the relegation zone. It’s just two wins in 17 for the Yellow Submarine so a trip to Osasuna wouldn’t have been on their list to Santa. Osasuna are unbeaten in seven at home, winning four, and they’ll edge another here. Osasuna with under 3.5 goals looks safe at 8/5.
Racing Santander v Real Sociedad (6.45pm)
Home win: 11/10 Draw: 9/4 Away win: 5/2
Betting tip: Despite lying second bottom, Santander’s form isn’t actually that bad. They’ve only lost four of their last 12 games, but drawn seven of 15, so the old adage that you might as well win one then lose one rather than draw two is proving true. Sociedad sit comfortably in mid-table having lost one more than Santander this season and that tells the story of the draws, so back another here at 9/4.
Valencia v Malaga (8.30pm)
Home win: 11/10 Draw: 9/4 Away win: 5/2
Betting tip: Valencia were stunned 2-1 by Betis last time out in a result which went against the grain of both sides’ form. Los Che will be hoping to put that abhorration behind them when big-spending Malaga visit the Mestalla. Los Boquerones have designs on a Champions League spot and this is the type of game they’ll have to get points from to prove their credentials. However, the inconsistency they’ve shown all season proves that they aren’t quite there, so back Valencia with over 2.5 goals at 31/20.
