Saturday December 10th
Levante v Sevilla
Home win: 37/20 Draw: 11/5 Away win: 29/20
Betting Tip: Levante may have lost four of their last five after that blistering opening sequence but it’s fair to say the fixtures haven’t been kind. The loss to Barca away was standard but they’ve also lost at Atletico and Osasuna – who boast impressive home records – and in-form Valencia at home. On their own patch they’ve won five of their last six whilst opponents Sevilla have drawn five on the road so far, so I’m plumping for another draw at 11/5.
Real Betis v Valencia
Home win: 21/10 Draw: 23/10 Away win: 5/4
Betting Tip: Betis are dire. One point from ten games is comfortably the worst form in La Liga and if they don’t start picking points up from somewhere they’ll soon be back in Liga Adelante. Unfortunately the revival won’t start this weekend. Valencia were disappointing at Chelsea on Tuesday but domestically they’re firing and should have enough to cement their customary third place spot. Double your money on a Valencia win with under 3.5 goals at 19/10.
Real Madrid v Barcelona
Home win: 27/20 Draw: 5/2 Away win: 37/20
Betting Tip: Easily the most anticipated game in Europe so far this season and Spain’s equivalent of the Grand National so make sure you get a couple of quid down. Real are the side on form and making strong statements to rid Barca of their La Liga and Champions League crowns. Los Blancos have now won 15 games in a row and have done it scoring close to four goals a game. They’re scoring almost five a game at home and perhaps there’s only one side who can halt that run. However, Barca have dropped points frequently on the road this season and aren’t playing with the conviction that has made them Spain’s top dogs for the last three seasons. Saying that, this side is full of big game players and they’ve won three of their last five games at the Bernabeu. It’s difficult to call the result, so duck out an back one red card in the match at 21/10.
Sunday December 4th
Rayo Vallecano v Sporting Gijon
Home win: Evens Draw: 9/4 Away win: 14/5
Betting Tip: Vallecano have lost their last three but they were against Barcelona, Atletico and Valencia, otherwise they’re stuck in the middle which will suit them fine. Gijon have found their feet after an awful start but have lost their last two after five unbeaten. One of them was to Real – so look nothing into that – they were hammered by Levante in their last away game. There won’t be many goals around so Vallecano with under 2.5 goals looks tasty at 29/10.
Getafe v Granada
Home win: 3/4 Draw: 5/2 Away win: 15/4
Betting Tip: Getafe are a strange little side: They routinely get beaten away but are decent at home and have recently accounted for Atletico and Barcelona at the Alfonso Perez. Even with those scalps, Getafe still find themselves on the precipice of the relegation zone which used to be the habitual residence of Granada. Three wins and two draws from their last five have seen the Andalusians climb into the safety of mid-table and Quique Pina has turned them into a nuggety little side. They rarely get stuffed, and with form and confidence behind them they can easily claim a draw at 5/2.
Villarreal v Real Sociedad
Home win: 3/4 Draw: 5/2 Away win: 15/4
Betting Tip: 2011/12 is proving to be an annus horribilis for Villarreal. A midweek defeat to Napoli meant they ended their Champions League campaign pointless and a return to European competition for next season is looking some way off. The Yellow Submarine are plummeting to the depths of La Liga with two wins in eleven and four losses on the bounce. Sociedad have claimed seven points from their last nine but again they’re no great shakes when they have to travel – losing five from seven. This has got draw written all over it, but I think Villarreal can sneak this with both scoring. Villarreal with over 2.5 goals is 2/1.
Malaga v Osasuna
Home win: 57/100 Draw: 11/4 Away win: 5/1
Betting Tip: It seems to be one step forward and one back for Malaga at the moment who lost to Sociedad last weekend after three wins and a draw. They have been strong at La Rosaleda though winning five of six. Similarly, opponents Osasuna are more comfortable in their own backyard but two of their three defeats away this year were the default drillings by Barca and Real and I reckon they’ve got enough here to claim a point at 11/4.
Real Zaragoza v Mallorca
Home win: 11/10 Draw: 9/4 Away win: 5/2
Betting Tip: Zaragoza are another side who can’t buy a win. They’ve got one draw to show for their efforts from their last seven games and as such are propping up the rest. Mallorca are without a win off the island all season and they’ll get few better opportunities to correct that stat. 5/2 for a Mallorca win looks too long to avoid given Zaragoza’s travails.
Bilbao v Santander
Home win: 21/50 Draw: 333/100 Away win: 13/2
Betting Tip: Bilbao have turned themselves into one of the most complete sides outside the top three. The men from the Basque country have lost just once in fifteen in all competitions and are doing nicely in the Europa League. One slight criticism is that they don’t score many, which may account for six league draws this season. Nevertheless, they’re a tricky proposition at San Mames as Barcelona found out a few weeks ago. Santander recorded only their second win of the season last time out and they won’t have enough to stop Bilbao rolling on. Bilbao with under 3.5 goals at evens is the safest bet of the weekend.
Espanyol v Atletico Madrid
Home win: 9/5 Draw: 23/10 Away win: 29/20
Betting Tip: Atletico are gradually inching their way up the table but a handful of decent results are perforated by losses here and there – especially on the road. Los Rojablancos are unbeaten at home but are yet to win away which is hindering their fight for a European slot. The talent in their ranks means they should be sweeping aside teams like Espanyol but their deficiencies means that this will be a tricky assignment. Espanyol don’t score or concede many, and with Atletico’s awful away form, a draw looks most likely and best value at 23/10.
