A new year signifies a new start, a clean slate, a blank canvas full of bright opportunities.
Yet with the opening La Liga fixtures of 2012 fast approaching, one question remains all-consuming for punters: can you find any value in backing Real Madrid at home?
Los Blancos are short-priced, odds-on favourites to win at home in every league match they play, with one notable, Catalan exception of course.
Against Granada they are an inconceivable 1/20 to win, while the draw is on offer at 10/1 and the newly-promoted Andalusians are available at a whopping 33/1 to win in the Bernabeu.
Football betting fans know all too well that stunning one-off upsets can happen. Just last weekend in the Premier League, Blackburn pulled off the highest-priced shock in the competition’s history by winning at Manchester United at 28/1.
In fact, the only other team to win a match in a major European league at higher odds are Hercules in their staggering success at Barcelona last season, which was priced at 33/1. In short, if Granada win in the Bernabeu it will be an historic occasion.
Over 2.5 goals in the second period is on offer at 27/20 and the price looks appealing. Nine out of Madrid’s 16 league matches this season have seen three or more goals in the second half.
However, Jose Mourinho’s men will have more than enough to get past Granada – it just remains to be seen if any value can be found in backing them.
You may be tempted to back the home side to win despite giving Granada a 2-0 lead, but the price of 1/ 2 would require some serious investment for any decent return.
Instead, try looking at the second-half goals market. Over 2.5 goals in the second period is on offer at 27/20 and the price looks appealing.
Nine out of Madrid’s 16 league matches this season have seen three or more goals in the second half and against a resilient Granada side who have conceded just ten times on the road this season, they may struggle to make a big impact prior to the interval.
But there seems little doubt that Madrid have enough quality and strength to ensure a comfortable home victory – just take those 27/20 odds on a second-half onslaught.
