Betting on anything other than a Barcelona victory has proved unsuccessful on the most occasions in La Liga this season and Saturday’s clash with Villarreal is no different.
Pep Guardiola’s men have not been at their brilliant best in recent weeks, but that has not stopped them from maintaining their five-point lead over Real Madrid in the title race.
The Yellow Submarine are sure to provide a stern test, but a closer look at the form suggests that the Catalans should have enough to register another priceless victory on the road.
Barcelona may have only won two of their last eight league meetings with Villarreal – a surprising statistic in itself – but both of those victories came at El Madrigal.
And of course, they are the only club in Spain who can boast an unbeaten record on the road, having smashed 42 goals away from the Nou Camp already this season, conceding just six in the process.
Amazingly, the devastating triumvirate of Lionel Messi, David Villa and Pedro – who have scored 57 of Barcelona’s 81 league goals to date – have all failed to find the net in the past three games.
This surely cannot continue for a fourth straight match and betting on Messi to open the scoring at 5/2 could be a decent play.
Meanwhile, Villarreal are priced at 15/4 to cause what would be a major upset, despite the fact that they have several dangerous players and currently sit fourth in the table.
It is also worth noting that they have scored in every league clash with Barcelona since November 2006, so perhaps a 2-1 victory for the visitors could be worth a punt at 15/2.
Anyone who believes Juan Carlos Garrido’s men will open the scoring could do worse than look at 15-goal top scorer Guiseppe Rossi, who is priced at 7/1, or fit-again Brazilian hitman Nilmar (6/1 to score first).
A successful £10 stake on Barcelona to beat Villarreal 1-0 at 33/4 with bwin would return £92.50. New customers can register here to claim a free £25 bet.
