Sunday’s El Clasico could be a season defining match merely seven weeks into the new campaign. Given that a victory for Barcelona would put them 11 points ahead of their rivals Real Madrid, the contest has an unusually high level of importance for a game played in October.
While Barca have generally had the better of Madrid in recent encounters, the Catalans have only won two of their last five games at home against Madrid, and with Los Blancos victorious in their previous league visit to the Camp Nou back in April, the price of 27/10 for an away win will surely tempt a few punters.
It is likely to be the biggest price for Madrid to win a match this season. A home victory meanwhile is offered at 17/20, and given that the azulgrana are the only side in the Spanish top flight to have won all six matches played so far, equaling their best ever start to a season, a convincing argument too could be made for backing them as well.
There can be little doubt however that a high scoring game looks extremely likely, with each of the last eight meetings between these two sides seeing over 2.5 goals. A repeat of that on Sunday evening is priced at 53/100, and punters looking to invest heavily in the game could do worse than backing at least three goals to be scored. On a similar theme, both teams to score looks a nailed on selection, having paid out in each of the last nine Clasicos, although the price of 12/25 will only attract serious punters.
In the goal scorers market, there will as always be money for Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, with the Portuguese in particularly impressive recent form having notched consecutive hat-tricks in his last two matches. He can be backed at 4/1 to open the scoring, while his Argentine counterpart is offered at 3/1 to do the same.
Yet the bet offering the most value could well be backing Madrid to score over 1.5 goals at 7/5. This has proved the correct selection in each of the last four meetings between these two oldest of rivals, and has also paid out in each of Madrid’s last four competitive matches. Barcelona meanwhile have conceded at least twice in two of their last four matches, and without their first choice centre back pairing of Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique, they could be susceptible to the champions’ attacking prowess.
Recommended bet: Real Madrid to score over 1.5 goals @ 7/5
