The notion that anyone can beat anyone in the Championship has never been truer than this season so far.
Three months ago, you would have been pushed to find too many people telling you that Southampton would be way out in front at top of the division.
Equally, few would have predicted Nottingham Forest to be just clear of the relegation zone with a third of the games played.
However, arguably the game of the day in the Championship on Saturday sees two teams currently sitting pretty much where they were expected to be – in the play-off positions.
In fact, Middlesbrough are just a point shy of West Ham in second place, exceeding the hopes of even their most optimistic fans.
The same thing can be said about Saturday’s visitors to the Riverside Stadium, Blackpool. Despite impressing for much of their Premier League adventure before eventually succumbing to relegation, a good proportion of Ian Holloway’s Tangerine Army were far from expecting an immediate return to England’s top division.
Not least after losing their three stand-out performers from that campaign in David Vaughan, DJ Campbell and Charlie Adam.
But in recent weeks, Blackpool’s key men have been their new signings. Veteran Kevin Phillips, Lomano Lua-Lua and Jonjo Shelvey have notched eight goals in their last four outings.
The Seasiders will be looking to extended their winning streak – which includes a remarkable 5-0 thumping of Leeds United – to three against Tony Mowbray’s men.
Middlesbrough, despite their lofty position, aren’t scoring as many as most of their rivals in the top half of the table. In fact, they have only eight goals in their last ten league encounters.
With Blackpool on the rise and scoring freely, they could easily take advantage of their opponents’ shortcomings, and a two-nil victory for the away side looks incredible at 18/1, meaning that punters who use their free £25 bet will see a return of £475 if they correctly predict this.
