A run of five defeats in their last six means Burnley, who were not far off a play-off spot last season after a solid run-in, are hovering just above the relegation zone with 17 games gone in the 2011-12 Championship season.
Worryingly for Eddie Howe’s men, their prospects look bleak ahead of their next fixture, a trip to sixth-placed Hull.
Not only do Hull restrict the number of goals scored against them; they also have the joint-third worst attack in the division.
Although Hull have not had the best of starts at the KC Stadium, having won four and lost three of their three home league games so far, Burnley’s recent form suggests they are far from capable of taking advantage of this weakness.
In the Clarets’ run of five defeats in six, only once have they managed to score more than one goal.
This lack of attacking prowess is particularly worrying when Hull’s miserly defence is considered.
Only Middlesbrough and West Ham have shipped fewer goals than the Tigers, with just seven goals conceded in their seven home games and an average of 0.94 goals let in during their 16 matches so far this campaign.
Given Burnley’s poor run of form and their lack of attacking threat, Hull go into the game as 4/5 favourites to win all three points.
This leaves a draw at 23/10 and a Burnley win at 7/2.
But rather than jump on the odds of 4/5 on a Hull victory in bwin’s 3Way football betting market, consider backing a Hull victory with under 2.5 goals at odds of 14/5.
For not only do Hull restrict the number of goals scored against them; they also have the joint-third worst attack in the division.
With only 16 Championship goals scored this season, any Hull victory is likely to be by the slimmest of margins.
Indeed, two of the four home league wins secured by Hull so far this season have been achieved courtesy of a 1-0 scoreline, making this one final bet to consider at odds of 21/4.
