Southampton will fancy their chances of picking up another three points as they visit struggling Coventry on Saturday, but this being the Championship, things are rarely that simple.
The Saints start the weekend top of the pile, five points clear of second-placed West Ham, and boss Nigel Adkins will hope to come out the other side with that lead still intact.
Bwin’s 3Way football betting market has them at 3/4 to pick up another three points and maintain that cushion.
The south-coast club recorded another home win against Peterborough in midweek to make it eight on the bounce at St Mary’s and it’s largely due to that record that Southampton find themselves in such a lofty position.
However, the Saints have largely been devoid of divine inspiration on the road and are without an away win in the league since August, losing three and drawing three since the 5-2 drubbing of Ipswich.
Saying that, if Southampton’s form on their travels is patchy, then Coventry’s form is patchy everywhere. The Sky Blues have only won one of their last nine Championship games and have notched just two victories all season as they continue to slip further into relegation trouble.
They were slain 3-0 by Millwall at the New Den on Tuesday, with this latest loss coming on the back of a draw with bottom club Doncaster.
Form and fortune is not with Andy Thorn’s side right now and that is reflected in lengthy odds of 33/10 for the home win, with the draw at 13/5, although the double chance of Coventry or a draw at evens might not be a bad shout given Southampton’s varied away form.
If you’re looking for a bit more bang for your buck, you may as well explore the possibility of a Southampton win with goals.
Rickie Lambert and co are the division’s top scorers with 33 but again that figure is skewed by the beastings they give out at St Mary’s.
Away from home they’ve only scored 12 in seven outings and with Coventry only conceding six in seven at home, a Southampton win with under 3.5 goals at 31/20 could be the bet of the day.
