Southampton are favourites to come out on top of a game which almost guarantees goals at St Mary’s this evening.
The Saints, top scorers in the Championship, play host to Peterborough United, who also bring goals to the table in their guise as the second-best attacking side in the division.
Add to this the fact that the only two league meetings between the teams – played last season in League One – have been high-scoring encounters and a bet on the latest instalment to be another goal-fest looks ready to pay off.
League games at St Mary’s have featured more than three goals on average so far this season, with 23 scored in seven games, with this also being the case for Peterborough’s away games.
As such, a bet on there to be at least three goals in the game at odds of 1/2 looks like a banker.
Given Southampton have scored 19 of the 23 league goals at St Mary’s and Peterborough have conceded more than they have scored away, it also seems safe to assume that the Saints will outscore the Posh.
This assessment is backed up by the odds in bwin’s 3Way football betting market, where Southampton are 11/25 favourites to take all three points, a draw is at 3/1 and an away success is available at 25/4.
Given Southampton have won all of their last 18 home matches, Posh do not appear to have too much hope of getting anything out of the game, even allowing for their strong attacking record.
As such, punters may look to combining a goal bet with a Southampton win to secure more attractive returns.
The conservative option would be to bet on Southampton to win and for there to be at least three goals in the match.
But given the last time these two teams met at St Mary’s it finished 4-1 to the home team, and that when they met at London Road in the return fixture the game ended 4-4, the better option could be on the Saints to win a match with at least four goals at 19/10.
A successful £25 free bet on Southampton to beat Peterborough and over 3.5 goals scored in the game would return £72.50, with the free bet available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account.
