Managerless Blackburn Rovers welcome Sheffield Wednesday in the sole Championship match this evening with both teams on a terrible run of form.
Blackburn started the season well and were sitting top of the table early on, but a run of five matches without a win has left them down in 13th place, eight points adrift of the pace being set by Leicester City at the top of the table.
In those five matches, Rovers have picked up three draws on the road but have lost their last two at Ewood Park, going down 2-1 to Middlesbrough and 1-0 against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The Owls, for their part, are in a similar rut. Their long-overdue return to the Championship has not gone as planned thus far and they are lagging down in 22nd position. Dave Jones’ men have picked up just two points from their last nine matches, one of which came in the now-infamous draw against Yorkshire rivals Leeds United last Friday.
Wednesday are also yet to win on the road this campaign but did salvage a point in a 3-3 draw at Burnley in their last away trip, thanks to an 86th-minute equaliser by Michail Antonio.
That poor away record probably explains why the visitors are the 14/5 outsiders in bwin’s 3Way football betting market for tonight’s contest, with Blackburn installed as 91/100 favourites and the draw at 12/5.
There is no real standout bet among those three options, but in fairness to Blackburn, their last two home matches have come against strong opposition and against a ‘weaker’ Wednesday side, they could well get back to winning ways.
However, a price of 91/100 is simply too short to be worthy of any investment – particularly with the uncertainty surrounding the club as the search to find Steve Kean’s successor continues – so the best bet of the night could be in the goalscorer market.
Blackburn’s record signing Jordan Rhodes scored the opening goal in the 1-1 draw with Derby County last weekend and is averaging a goal every two games so far since his £8 million arrival from Huddersfield Town.
If you are feeling brave, take him to score first at 9/2, but for a more secure bet, back Rhodes to score in the 90 minutes at a price of 6/5. Anyone joining bwin.com can claim a free £20 bet and placing this on the Scotland international to score against the Owls would return £44 if successful.
Whether that would be enough to ensure Blackburn pick up the three points is anyone’s guess, but with Wednesday already shipping 11 goals in their five away league games to date, Rhodes is surely the man most likely to cash in on those defensive frailties.
