Doncaster Rovers may be lingering in the Championship relegation zone, nursing the loss of their main goal threat and without a win in four matches, but Dean Saunders’ men can still be confident of denying promotion hopefuls Reading on Saturday.
How the home side might trouble the visitors up front without striking talisman Billy Sharp, who has departed for Southampton, is a mystery, particularly when Doncaster have scored as few as ten goals this season at the Keepmoat Stadium – the poorest home goal haul in the division.
That makes the 23/10 odds on Doncaster to win arguably not long enough, but having said that, 23/20 on a Reading away victory does not make too much sense either. The Berkshire side have been highly erratic this season and face highly determined opposition.
Doncaster have conceded just once in their past five home Championship ties, a run that has seen them seal a shock win against second-placed Southampton, two further victories over Leicester and Barnsley, plus a 0-0 draw against third-placed Cardiff.
The Royals might have one of the highest number of away wins (six) in the division, but they are in the lower half of the table when it comes to away goals (14).
New signing Jason Roberts made an immediate impact to a blunt attack in scoring the winner last weekend against Bristol City in particularly amusing fashion.
But given the difficulties both sides have in scoring, a tight match is to be expected. Betting on a draw offers fantastic value at 11/5, as does betting on one goal or less to be scored at the same odds.
The real concern about both sides’ attacking threat might make backing a goalless draw at 27/4 too good for many to resist.
