Brighton to beat Watford @ 8/5
After an impressive first season back in the Championship last year in which they finished just above mid-table, Gus Poyet’s Brighton side look a good bet for promotion through the play-offs this time round following an impressive start.
A draw and three victories from their opening five games sees them currently occupy third spot, and they head to Vicarage Road in search of their fourth successive league win after comfortably dispatching of Barnsley, Burnley and Sheffield Wednesday.
The Seagull’ good form has in part been down to the goalscoring prowess of record-signing Craig Mackail-Smith, who has notched five of the 11 goals the South Coast side have scored in their last three matches to make him the league’s joint top scorer.
Poyet recruited well in the summer, in particular in the full-back areas with both Bruno and Wayne Bridge arriving from Valencia and Manchester City respectively and displaying their class almost immediately in both defence and in attack.
Watford’s start to the season hasn’t been quite as impressive, and the Hornets head into this game on the back of successive defeats, in which they conceded eight goals to make it two wins and three losses from their opening five league games.
Cardiff to beat Millwall @ 17/10
Malky Mackay’s Cardiff side go in search of their third successive league victory when they make the trip to the Den this evening as they look to keep the pace at the top of the table following three wins, a draw and a defeat so far this term.
In midfielder Peter Whittingham, the Bluebirds possess one of the outstanding talents outside of the top-flight, and the former Aston Villa man has found the net four times in his last two games to continue his remarkable goalscoring exploits for the club.
The Lions enter this game on the back of a 4-1 defeat away at Hull last Saturday to make it three defeats and two wins for Kenny Jackett’s men this season, and they’ve been unable to record a clean sheet in the league or cup so far this season.
The south London club have also seen the opposition score first in all but one of their games, and with the players that Mackay has at his disposal, particularly attackers such as Craig Bellamy and Nicky Maynard, this is a worrying statistic for the Lions.
Neither side was able to break the other down last season with both fixtures ending 0-0, but with the Bluebirds having picked up maximum points from their previous two games, they’ll be full of confidence that they can leave the capital with three points.
Bristol City to beat Peterborough @ 17/10
Five league games in and the only side in the entire Football League yet to pick up a point, Peterborough have made their worst ever start to a season as they find themselves rooted to the bottom of the Championship table with alarm bells ringing.
Posh head into the game on the back of a 5-2 thrashing at Burnley on Saturday which made it 12 goals conceded, more than any other team in the league, and they welcome a Bristol City side aiming for their fifth win in six trips to London Road.
Derek McInnes’ side have managed to pick up two wins so far this term, and were dealt a blow at the weekend after top-of-the-table Blackburn struck twice in injury time to record a 5-3 victory at Ashton Gate after the Robins looked to have secured a point.
The West Country side have narrowly lost both their games on the road this season 1-0, but this match provides them with the perfect opportunity to secure their first points away from home against a team that already look in big trouble.
