For large parts of this season, Blackpool – like Birmingham City – were suffering from the big boys party hangover, but since the turn of the year both have clicked into gear.
Ian Holloway’s men have won four of their last five league fixtures and six from eight including cup ties. What’s more, the Seasiders have also found their shooting boots, scoring 21 goals since the turn of 2012, meaning they’re well set for a charge to the top in the closing stages of the campaign.
On Saturday, Portsmouth have a day out at the beach hoping to burst the tangerine dream, but with just two away wins and nine defeats from 15, Pompey are unlikely to illuminate the Golden Mile.
Given that in-form Blackpool have the third-best home record in the league and Pompey the fourth-worst away record, you won’t have to give a promenade psychic a couple of quid to tell you the result of this one.
Bwin’s 3Way football betting market has Blackpool as strong 4/5 favourites for another victory, with Portsmouth at 333/100 and the draw at 12/5.
But odds of 4/5 for the home win aren’t going to land you the ‘big one’, so we need to look elsewhere to find some value.
Portsmouth have lost four of their last five matches and all season they’ve been conceding a fair few goals on the road (20 in 15 games) so I’m backing the hosts to cruise this.
If Kevin and Matt Phillips can click then the Pompey backline will be in for a busy afternoon down at Bloomfield Road.
With just two away wins and nine defeats from 15, Pompey are unlikely to illuminate the Golden Mile.
You can back Blackpool to win by two clear goals or more at 21/10, but a better shout is Blackpool to win a game featuring over 2.5 goals at 37/20, while the same bet with over 3.5 goals is at 4/1.
Blackpool have let in 36 goals so far and the visitors do have enough forward threat to add to that tally. If you do fancy Portsmouth to strike, the Blackpool multiple of 2-1, 3-1 or 4-1 is well priced at 18/5 and that gets my vote for this clash.
New customers who sign up for a bwin account are entitled to a free £25 bet and utilising that on a Blackpool to win 2-1, 3-1 or 4-1 at 18/5 could land you a kiss-me-quick £115.
One other area of note is the fortunes of the Seasiders before and after half-time.
Holloway’s interval speeches would be worth a listen at the best of times and they certainly seem to be doing the trick.
His men have gone on to win games eight times in the second half this season after an even opening 45 minutes and you can back them to do the same on Saturday at 15/4.
