Both Hull and West Ham approach their Saturday afternoon meeting on the back of disappointing midweek results in the Championship.
The Hammers were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw by struggling Bristol City in front of their own fans, while Nigel Pearson’s men suffered an unexpected loss away to Barnsley on Tuesday evening.
The Tigers’ defeat was surprising for two reasons; firstly, it saw a superb nine-match unbeaten run come to an abrupt end and secondly, it was only the third occasion this season that they have conceded more than once in a game.
Hull had the joint third-best defence last season and they have proven to be just as defensively sound this time around, conceding just 13 times in 14 games, the same number as this weekend’s opponents West Ham.
With both teams’ defences proving so difficult to breach, the chances of a goal fest in East Yorkshire are slim. The odds reflect this as the two shortest priced full-time scores are 0-0 at 15/2 and 1-1 at 5/1.
If you don’t see the game ending all square then past results would suggest that the best outcome to place your money on is 1-0. Four of Hull’s six home fixtures in the Championship have ended in one team winning by this scoreline.
It is the away side who are favourites to clinch the victory with a 1-0 at 31/4, while odds on a Hull win by the same score are slightly longer at 17/2.
For new customers to bwin using their free £25 bet on Hull clinching their sixth 1-0 win of the campaign, there would be a return of £247.50.
Predictions for this game are tough as there is very little to separate these two sides, with only four points and four places between them at the top of the Championship table.
The only notable difference is that while Hull have struggled in front of goal, averaging just one a game, the Hammers have found the net 26 times.
Although there are likely to be very few goals on offer on Saturday, West Ham’s superior attacking threat could well prove the difference on the day.
The plethora of talent at Sam Allardyce’s disposal is surely the reason that the East London side are 7/5 favourites for the win. Odds of 7/4 are offered on a Hull victory while bwin’s 3-way football betting market is concluded by odds of 23/10 on the draw.
