Queens Park Rangers have been all the rage to win the Championship after extending their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-0 win at Leeds United.
Punters piled onto their previous title odds of 9/2 following Clint Hill’s winner at Elland Road and the bwin traders have had to run for cover, shortening the R’s to 5/2.
With 13 points in the bag from their first five games, QPR are joint-top of the league alongside Blackpool, whose 1-0 win over Watford catapulted them into the promotion picture.
Paul Ince’s side aren’t expected to sustain their fast start though as they’re available at 28/1 to return to the Premier League as champions.
That defeat for Watford, who were joint favourites alongside QPR on Saturday morning, has buzzed the Hornets out to 11/2.
Confidence is high within punting circles regarding QPR’s promotion challenge.
Manager Harry Redknapp has overhauled a poorly balanced, but handsomely paid squad that was relegated with a whimper from the Premier League last season.
Big names like Christopher Samba, Park Ji Sung, Adel Taarabt and Loic Remy have been replaced with proven Championship grit and experience in the form of Charlie Austin, Karl Henry and Danny Simpson.
Although they haven’t played teams off the park – all of their four wins have come by one goal – there seems to be a real team spirit growing at Loftus Road, making them a tough nut to crack.
In typical Redknapp fashion, he’s also likely to dabble on transfer deadline day too, with the former Tottenham boss hoping to bring in “three or four” players to boost the quality of his squad.
Reports have linked Spurs duo Jermain Defoe and Benoît Assou-Ekotto with a £7m move to west London.
If Redknapp can get players of that quality – who will flourish at Championship level – through the door, then expect that 5/2 to disappear.
