A second pair of gloves, a half-time cuppa or maybe even a snood; there’s plenty of ways to keep warm on the terraces at this time of the season – but nothing quite beats the heartening feeling that comes with celebrating a goal.
If you backed our ‘Goals Galore’ selection last weekend, you could have warmed your wallet to the tune of ₤102 and so I’m sticking with Leeds United, Blackpool and Derby County as the Championship’s perfect cure for the cold.
Their combined matches last weekend averaged five goals and with inviting games this weekend – at home to Ipswich, at home to Blackburn and away at Bristol City respectively – they should easily be able to keep over the three-goal average.
New customers using the free £20 bet available when registering with bwin stand to win £98.81 if these six teams produce three or more goals again – and here’s why I think they will.
Over 2.5 goals in Leeds v Ipswich @ 18/25
A 3-1 loss to fellow treble team Derby kicked off last weekend’s Championship action and again showed why Neil Warnock’s side are a totally different proposition on the road, as opposed to the home comforts of Elland Road.
In front of the Spion Kop faithful, Neil Warnock’s team have knocked off former league leaders Leicester and Crystal Palace, as well as knocking out Premier League Everton and Southampton en route to their delayed Capital One Cup quarter-final date with World Club Cup pre-occupied Chelsea.
Following last weekend’s defeat, United should beware a revitalised Ipswich, who beat Millwall last time out but may still be bearing the scars of their last two trips away from Portman Road, in which they have shipped eight goals.
Over 2.5 goals in Blackpool v Blackburn @ 18/25
While Leeds and Derby kicked off the action last Saturday, Blackpool provided the late twist to snatch a last-minute draw against former manager Ian Holloway’s Crystal Palace.
That was just the latest instance of the Tangerines being involved in high-scoring drama, with Nouha Dicko’s late strike giving Blackpool their third 2-2 draw in the past month.
They’ll fancy their chances of keeping up that goal tally against a Blackburn side who have won just one in eight under Henning Berg, shipping four at home to Cardiff last Friday.
Though with 13-goal Jordan Rhodes at the other end, Blackpool may find once again that two goals aren’t enough to guarantee victory.
Over 2.5 goals in Bristol City v Derby County @ 13/20
The Rams’ 3-1 win over Leeds continued their hot home streak of averaging nearly 2.5 goals per game at Pride Park – but they are another side who don’t travel so well.
Yet no ground has been more welcoming to visiting sides than Ashton Gate, where Bristol City have shipped a league-high 25 goals, including four to Wolves last time out.
But as last weekend’s 3-2 win at Sheffield Wednesday showed, City can pack a punch at both ends and Derby’s England U21 keeper Frankie Fielding will no doubt see a lot of action against the division’s sixth-most potent home attack.
