Southampton will look to extend their good form at the beginning of the season with a win over Barnsley on Saturday.
The south-coast side suffered a blow this week, losing youngster Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain to Arsenal. The Gunners’ new signing offered Saints sheer pace on the wing, scoring ten goals in all competitions last season.
But scoring isn’t something that Saints struggle with, having begun the new campaign with impressive wins over Leeds and Torquay, bagging seven goals along the way.
And in Rickie Lambert and David Connolly they have two players who have shown they can finish off moves with aplomb.
Southampton’s forwards are supported by a midfield that includes Adam Lallana, probably the best young player in the division. His crosses will be lapped up by Lambert, who is known for his aerial ability.
Barnsley, on the other hand, are yet to score a goal. A shock 2-0 home defeat to Morcambe in the Carling Cup followed a 0-0 draw away to Nottingham Forest on the opening day of the season.
Boss Keith Hill will be hoping that summer signing Craig Davies, who scored 23 goals in 41 appearances for League Two winners Chesterfield last season, will buck that trend. However, the 25-year-old is untested in the Championship and may take some time to find his feet.
Barnsley have only beaten Southampton once in their last six attempts and are 17/10 to do it this weekend. In comparison, Southampton are 23/20 to continue their good form and notch a win at Oakwell.
The best bet could be on the half-time result. Saints scored two early goals in their opener against Leeds without reply and are 21/10 to lead at half-time against Barnsley.
