Southampton host Ipswich Town this evening in a meeting of two of the Championship’s in-form sides.
The Saints enjoyed a 1-0 away win at Leeds on Saturday thanks to Rickie Lambert’s 20th league goal of the season, though it was experienced stopper Kelvin Davis whom the league leaders were indebted to.
The former Ipswich goalkeeper was in inspired form to deny Leeds with a string of exceptional saves in front of the Sky cameras.
Saints’ mid-season blips looks to be firmly behind them and they are now unbeaten in six, four of those wins, and have also registered six clean sheets in their past nine league fixtures.
Mercurial midfielder Adam Lallana should return this evening too for the home side, although Ipswich will have no shortage of confidence and arrive with a near fully-fit squad themselves.
Only the punished Jimmy Bullard misses out for Paul Jewell’s side, who are now chasing their sixth league win in seven.
Goals should be a certainty as the Championship’s top attack squares off against the division’s most porous defence. Southampton have netted 62 to Ipswich’s 60 conceded and the last four encounters between the two sides have conjured up 17 goals.
Until a month ago, both Jewell and Ipswich’s Championship position looked unsafe, but a 5-1 thumping of West Ham sparked a winning run that has seen the Tractor Boys motor away from trouble and much credit for the upturn in form should be attributed to the form of Michael Chopra.
The former Cardiff striker netted his sixth goal in as many matches in Saturday’s comfortable 3-0 victory over Bristol City and he now has 13 for the season.
Town now sit 14th in the table and they are priced at 17/4 for victory with bwin, while the Saints are 13/5 and the draw price is 14/5.
Recent meetings between the sides suggest that Southampton deserve their favouritism – the home side have won the last three matches.
Their five clashes at St Mary’s thus far have served up a mixed bag of results. The Saints have two wins, while Town have one victory and the other two were draws.
This evening’s fixture could also be a tough one to call, although goals should be a certainty, as the Championship’s top attack squares off against the division’s most porous defence.
Southampton have netted 62 to Ipswich’s 60 conceded and the last four encounters between the two sides have conjured up 17 goals.
As such, bwin’s number of goals market should have plenty of interest and the price of 333/100 for over 4.5 goals in the match could be a steal.
