As the Championship heads into its final few months, Derby County and Watford meet in a battle for supremacy in their mid-table obscurity.
With both sides seemingly out of the play-off and relegation pictures, there may not be much significance to this game but, if it’s not too soon to start thinking about it, there is always the theory that a strong finish can set a side up nicely for next season.
In this fixture, home side Derby appear to have the edge having not lost to the Hornets since 2005, the season Aidy Boothroyd took Watford to the Premier League.
If teams just played the second halves of games, Derby would be seventh.
It’s no surprise, then, that Derby have been made favourites in bwin’s 3Way football betting market at 5/4, while a Watford win is priced at 21/10 and a draw is at 11/5.
Nigel Clough’s men have had another season of false dawns. After a big overhaul in the summer and a promising start, it looked like the Rams would be fighting at the right end of the table. But, after yet another poor mid-season run, they languish in 14th.
However, if any positives are to be taken, it has to be their second half performances. If teams just played the second halves of games, Derby would be seventh.
Taking that into account, betting on Derby to win the second half looks an excellent prospect at 31/20 – particularly as Watford have only won the second half on three occasions away from home this season.
Watford have surpassed many people’s expectations this season with a safe mid-table berth and Sean Dyche’s side have the uncanny ability to get decent results. In the past week, they have come from 2-0 down against Burnley to win and taken a point from high-flying West Ham.
That said, their away record does not make for good reading. They have only won three times on their travels this season and managed a measly 13 goals in the process.
With Watford unlikely to score, use bwin’s free £25 bet available to new customers for Derby to win to nil at 29/10 and you could score yourself a nice £97.50.
Now who said mid-table end of season games meant nothing?
