Blackpool are closing in on a double transfer swoop as they start to rebuild following a spate of exits.
Star midfielder Charlie Adam’s was the most high-profile departure, with the Scot having completed a big-money move to Liverpool yesterday.
However, he is far from the only player to have jumped ship following Blackpool’s relegation on the final day of last season.
David Vaughan has moved to Sunderland on a free transfer, Andy Reid has joined Nottingham Forest, Rob Edwards has departed for Barnsley and Paul Rachubka is now at Leeds.
It is perhaps for this reason that Blackpool’s Championship title odds have drifted from 16/1 to 18/1, although manager Ian Holloway is seeking to address this by revamping his squad to ensure it is capable of returning the Seasiders back to the Premier League.
Veteran striker Kevin Phillips has been earmarked as the man to provide Blackpool with sufficient firepower to mount a title challenge, while Matt Hill could also arrive to strengthen the defence.
However, the news that Stephen Crainey has signed for another two years after the expiry of his old contract means the Hill deal could yet fall through.
Either way, it seems that it would be too early to write off Blackpool’s chances just yet, particularly given the motivational powers of Holloway.
A successful £25 free bet on Blackpool to bounce straight back to the Premier League, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £475.
According to Bojan Djordjic, Holloway’s inspirational qualities are likely to have a big impact on Blackpool’s season.
“If you ask any player who has had Ollie, even the guys that didn’t play, he always encourages and really brings the best out of you,” he commented.
“He can be harsh and hard sometimes, which players don’t understand until they leave, but he wants the best and he’s the most positive man I know.”
