This Championship fixture pits together a Crystal Palace side that could be forgiven for thinking they are already on their summer holidays and relegation-threatened Portsmouth, who will need a perfect run of results – and a whole load of luck – to avoid relegation to England’s third tier.
Portsmouth are favourites in bwin’s 3Way football betting market at odds of 19/20, while the draw is 11/5 and Palace are a 29/10 chance to collect all three points from a match for the first time in almost four weeks.
Michael Appleton’s men kept their survival hopes alive in dramatic fashion at Doncaster on Saturday – scoring twice in injury time to salvage a 4-3 victory – but they still sit seven points adrift of safety with only three games remaining.
Pompey have lost their last two home matches, including a 5-1 hammering by Burnley, but before that they picked up two quick wins against high-flying Birmingham and Hull City.
There is every chance Portsmouth could be playing a side with one eye on the white sandy beaches of Benidorm tonight.
In Portsmouth’s last ten home matches, both teams have only scored on two occasions, so both teams NOT to score here is a decent-looking 4/5 chance.
Crystal Palace are sitting safely in 16th place after their mid-season promise fizzled out and left them without a win in six matches (just two points collected in that time), so there is every chance Portsmouth could be playing a side with one eye on the white sandy beaches of Benidorm tonight.
On the road, the Eagles have not won since New Year’s Eve but they have only lost three times, drawing five on the bounce through February and into early March.
In that time, they drew 0-0 twice and 25/4 is the price about a 0-0 draw here. A 1-1 draw is 5/1 and for the more extravagant punter, 2-2 is a 14/1 chance.
But all statistics aside, the telling factor here is surely that Portsmouth need to win this game and Palace don’t.
Pompey know that they will be relegated if they lose and even a victory would not be enough to keep them up if Bristol City beat West Ham, so that is probably motivation enough to ensure they at least do their job.
And given both teams are among the lowest scorers in the division, it could be worth siding with a Portsmouth win to nil.
You can get odds of 2/1 on this outcome or 27/20 on Crystal Palace not scoring a goal, which gives us a little more reliability given that the 0-0 draw is also covered in that bet.
The third option is to back Portsmouth to win either 1-0, 2-0 or 3-0 at 11/5 and that is the option we are happy to side with.
