Following in the footsteps of Norwich City last term, Southampton, along with their south-coast rivals Brighton and Hove Albion, are taking the Championship by storm after winning promotion from League One.
After edging past Nottingham Forest last weekend, Saints moved back into the automatic promotion places and all signs point to them still being there after this weekend’s round of games.
Striker Ricky Lambert is in supreme form, scoring a treble against Forest to take his season’s tally to five. And with fellow striker David Connolly and midfielder Adam Lallana also riding high in the top scorers chart, Southampton have proved they have the firepower to exploit any signs of weariness shown by their opponents.
Birmingham were also impressive last time out in the league, brushing Millwall aside 3-0 to boost their spirits following a stuttering start to their campaign. However, fielding a strong side – albeit with a few changes – in their Europa League bow against Braga on Thursday might cost them the points on Sunday.
Blues boss Chris Hughton has admitted they could arguably do without the extra
games, and though he is expected to rotate the squad accordingly, they surely will
not relish a trip to one of the league’s form sides.
The formbook certainly points to a comprehensive victory for the south coast side, and punters who use their free £25 bet will see a return of £575 if they correctly back the home team to win 4-0.
