Saturday’s Champions League final triumph over Borussia Dortmund confirmed beyond all doubt what most of us knew already – that Bayern Munich are the best team on Planet Football right now.
In a season where they romped to the Bundesliga title in record speed and by a record margin, losing just one game and dropping just 11 points, they now have the chance to seal an historic treble as they take on mid-table finishers Stuttgart in Berlin on Saturday.
And, given the way Bayern have played this season, it would be one helluva shock if they don’t complete the job in comfortable fashion.
Jupp Heynckes’ side have already knocked out Borussia Dortmund by beating them at the Westfalenstadion before they trounced Wolfsburg 6-1 in the semi-final to set up the tie with Stuttgart.
On top of that, they go into the match having won 20 and drawn one of their last 21 domestic matches, and they are without a domestic defeat since October.
And as if that wasn’t enough, they have won their last eight games against Stuttgart, scoring six goals in a match twice (including once already this season) and five goals in a game once, while they have conceded just one goal in their last four meetings.
Stuttgart haven’t won the German Cup since 1997 and could be rusty considering that they haven’t played a match since 18th May, fourteen days ago.
For this reason, it is no surprise that Bayern Munich are overwhelming favourites, priced at 1/5 to win the match in 90 minutes and 2/25 to lift the trophy, compared with 9/1 on Stuttgart in 90 minutes and 11/2 to lift the trophy.
Even the draw is as long as 25/4 as the bookies have nailed their colours firmly to the Bayern mast, and who can blame them?
The best bet in this one, then, could be backing Bayern to put Stuttgart to the sword.
The European Champions have scored four or more goals in a game on no less than 14 occasions this campaign, including once already against Stuttgart, and are 23/4 to win either 4-0, 5-0 or 6-0 in the multiple correct score market.
