Last year’s Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund take on cup winners Schalke in the German Super Cup this evening.
Dortmund are 6/5 favourites to win the match and 13/20 to lift the cup, with multiple factors working in favour of die Schwarzgelben.
Firstly, Jurgen Klopp’s men picked up four points off Schalke last season, including a 3-1 win at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkirchen.
Then there is the fact that Dortmund collected almost twice as many points as their opponents this evening in last year’s league campaign.
While die Schwarzgelben topped the table with 75 points, seven points clear of nearest-challengers Bayer Leverkusen, Schalke only managed to finish in 14th place with a haul of 40 points.
Dortmund look to be in with a better shot of the title than Schalke this season as well, with bwin’s football betting market making the die Schwarzgelben second-favourites with odds of 9/2 and die Knappen fourth-favourites with odds of 15/1.
This is hardly surprising for, while Dortmund have been weakened by the loss of midfielder Nuri Sahin to Real Madrid over the summer, but they can still boast the likes of Lucas Barrios, Sven Bender, Shinji Kagawa, Neven Subotic and Mario Gotze in their ranks.
However, Schalke are not without a glimmer of hope, particularly because many of Dortmund’s stars may not to be fit to take to the field this evening.
With Antonio da Silva, Jakub Blaszczykowski, Marvin Bakalorz and Marcel Schmelzer definitely out, there are question marks over the involvement of Kevin Grosskreutz, Subotic, Bender and Gotze.
As such, Schalke could yet be good bets to win the match at odds of 21/10, particularly as they can also boast home advantage.
A successful £25 free bet on Schalke to beat Dortmund, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £77.50.
That said, with Klopp expecting whoever he selects to give “100 per cent”, Dortmund’s superior pedigree should win through.
And with die Schwarzgelben scoring more than 1.5 goals in 14 of their 17 away matches last season, a bet on them to do the same this evening could prove tempting at odds of 6/5.
