With the start of the season fast approaching, Mario Gomez is the strong favourite to finish top goalscorer in the Bundesliga for the second year running.
The German bagged 28 league goals for Bayern Munich last season to finish six clear of nearest rival Papiss Demba Cisse in the top scorer standings.
Bayern were the most potent attacking force in the German top flight last season, scoring an average of 2.38 goals a game.
Gomez grabbed 35 per cent of Bayern’s goals and with the Bavarian giants having strengthened their team over the summer, his rich vein of form looks likely to continue.
With this in mind, a successful £25 free bet on Gomez to finish the 2011-12 season as the Bundesliga’s top scorer, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £100.
Gomez’s nearest challengers are tipped to be Lucios Barrios and Arjen Robben, with Cisse fancied to be less prolific in his second season in the top flight with Freiburg.
Barrios and Robben are both priced at 9/1 to finish as top scorer, although given Robben’s injury record Barrios looks the better bet.
The Dutchman’s strike-rate was sensational last season, with the winger averaging 0.86 goals a game.
However, as injury prevented him from making more than 14 appearances, he only managed 12 goals.
To make matters worse, an ankle injury has already made him a doubt for the start of Bayern’s Bundesliga campaign, suggesting his poor fitness record is set to continue.
Barrios, by way of contrast, only managed 0.5 goals a game on average, but the fact that he has managed more than 30 league appearances in the last two years suggests he will be contending at the top of the goalscorer chart come the end of the season.
Looking further down the betting market, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, Raul and Claudio Pizarro are joint-fourth favourites to win the Bundesliga Golden Boot with odds of 11/1.
Raul scored 13 league goals for Schalke in his debut season for the club, although suggestions that he may play in a deeper role this campaign could hamper his chances of bettering this total.
Meanwhile, Huntelaar will be looking to recapture the form which saw him score 34 goals in 39 starts for Ajax in the 2007-08 season.
Raul’s teammate only scored eight league goals last year, although given he was playing in a side struggling near the foot of the table this tally is likely to be improve as long as Schalke recapture their form.
Werder Bremen’s Pizarro also had a poor season by his standards, although again in a team bereft of form.
As such, he can be expected to be more of a threat to Gomez’s superiority this time around, although given the German’s sensational record last season the Bayern player still looks the best bet.
