Portugal and Luxembourg will stage a dress rehearsal for the 2014 World Cup qualification campaign when they meet at Faro’s Algarve Stadium this evening.
The two sides were drawn in qualification Group F alongside Russia, Israel, Northern Ireland and Azerbaijan, with matches due to take place from September next year.
Prior to the draw being made, Portugal and Luxembourg agreed to meet in a friendly as part of preparations for the Euro 2012 qualification campaigns they are involved in.
Portugal are top of their group with a record of three wins, a draw and a defeat from their five matches, while Luxembourg have picked up just one point from their seven games so far.
This is suggestive of a big disparity between the two teams, and bwin’s 3Way football betting market only serves to emphasis this fact.
Portugal are heavy 1/20 favourites to emerge with a win, with a draw priced at 11/1 and an unlikely Luxembourg success at 20/1.
A look at the head-to-head record between the two sides does not offer Luxembourg any more hope, with the Red Lions having won just once – in 1962 – and secured a solitary draw to Portugal’s ten wins.
With this in mind, it seems unlikely that Luxembourg will cause an upset this evening and betting on a Portugal win seems the only sensible thing to do in the results market.
However, with betting on a Portugal victory unlikely to secure the average punter big returns, it could be that the best odds are found elsewhere.
For instance, Luxembourg are unlikely to get on the score sheet – they have located the back of the net in just three of their last 11 games, and only once in this sequence did they score more than a single goal.
As such, Luxembourg look safe bets to fire another blank at odds of 11/25.
A successful £25 free bet on Luxembourg failing to score, available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account, would return £36.
It could also be worth betting on there being fewer than 2.5 goals in the game given Luxembourg restricted in-form France to 2-0 wins in two recent qualifiers.
