At 10/1, Netherlands striker Robin van Persie has been installed as the second favourite to finish as top goal scorer at Euro 2012.
Van Persie has had a remarkable year for his club side Arsenal, scoring 30 times in the Premier League this season for the Gunners and claiming both the PFA and Football Writers’ Association awards for Player of the Year.
The 28-year-old has also been in tremendous form for his country throughout their qualifying campaign for the European Championships, finding the back of the net on six occasions, including four against the whipping boys of Europe, San Marino.
Van Persie misses out on top spot in bwin’s top goalscorer market due to odds of 7/1 on Germany’s Mario Gomez to transfer his free-scoring Bayern Munich form into the Euros.
As Premier League defences will testify, no matter where Van Persie does end up playing he is likely to find the back of the net.
Despite his short odds and remarkable goalscoring achievements, Van Persie is not guaranteed a starting place in his preferred central striker role due to the even more impressive record of his teammate this summer, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.
Huntelaar, the Schalke striker, finished as top scorer in the Bundesliga this season with 29 goals in 34 games.
Meanwhile, he netted an astonishing 11 times for Bert van Marwijk’s Netherlands side in just ten qualifying games.
With two players in the goalscoring form of their lives, the Oranje coach will surely have to find a place for both men in his first eleven and that could mean Van Persie moving out to the right hand, with Arjen Robben on the left and Wesley Sneijder just behind.
Even so, as Premier League defences will testify, no matter where Van Persie does end up playing he is likely to find the back of the net.
Knowing this, odds of 10/1 on him finishing top scorer are extremely appealing.
And, with Huntelaar also in the mix, 7/1 on the Netherlands to win Euro 2012 could be a good bet as well.
