There are just over two weeks until the start of the European Championships and the fight for places in the Netherlands squad begins in earnest against Bulgaria in Amsterdam.
Bert van Marwijk saw his team beaten 3-2 by Champions League finalists Bayern Munich in a friendly on Tuesday night, but the match against Bulgaria will be the first opportunity the Dutch coach has to work with his full complement of players.
Van Marwijk has cut his initial 36-man preliminary squad down to 27, but stills needs to shatter the dreams of four more players before the cut-off date of May 29th.
This means that the three uncapped players – Luciano Narsingh, Adam Maher and Jetro Willems – who are still in the squad will need to impress against Bulgaria to grab one of the 23 places on the plane to eastern Europe.
Given Holland’s superiority over Bulgaria, it would be no surprise to see more than 3.5 goals in the game.
Despite what is expected to be a largely inexperienced side, the Oranje are massive 9/50 favourites to beat Bulgaria in bwin’s 3Way football betting market. Their opponents have nothing to play for and are missing captain Stiliyan Petrov due to his fight with leukaemia, so are understandably a very long shot at 15/1. The draw is just as unlikely at 21/4.
Saturday night’s match at the Amsterdam ArenA could well see two of the hottest strikers in Europe, Robin van Persie and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, paired together up front.
The duo have scored more than 60 goals between them this season.
There has been much debate in the Netherlands about who should start as the main striker this summer, but Van Marwijk insists they can play together.
If indeed they do both start this weekend, and given Holland’s superiority over Bulgaria, it would be no surprise to see more than 3.5 goals in the game. And at 6/5, it looks an appealing option.
New customers to bwin can claim a free £25 bet and successfully placing this on odds of 6/5 for over 3.5 goals would see a return of £55.
Alternatively, odds of 15/4 are available on the home side racking up four goals in front of a boisterous crowd. And with the Dutch averaging 4.6 goals at home in qualifying for Euro 2012, this could also pay off.
Over 3.5 goals in the game @ 6/5
Holland to score four or more goals @ 15/4
