Spain’s comeback win over Czech Republic last night has consolidated their place at the top of their qualifying group for Euro 2012 and bwin.com has kept them favourites to win the tournament as a result.
The World Cup winners had to rely on a late brace from Barcelona forward David Villa to collect three points in the game, after Bordeaux’s Jaroslav Plasil gave the Czechs a shock lead in the first half.
But the home team roared back in the second period and Villa’s double secured the victory, which sees Spain go six points clear at the top of the group.
They have four wins from four matches and have already taken a giant stride towards securing their qualification for next summer’s tournament in Poland and Ukraine.
Czech Republic are their closest rivals in the group with six points from four games but the Spanish will be confident of progressing and defending their title next summer.
Spain are currently the holders of both the World Cup and the European Championships and it is no surprise to see they are the early favourites in the betting for the Euro 2012 event.
In Villa and £50 million Chelsea signing Fernando Torres they have a strikeforce which is the envy of international football teams across the globe, while Andres Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas and Xavi provide the creativity from midfield.
Carles Puyol and Gerard Pique – another pair of Barcelona players in the Spanish ranks – provide stability at the back and the whole team are rightly lauded for their excellent retention of the ball.
Although the tournament is still more than a year away, the Euro 2012 odds show that Germany are expected to be the biggest threat to Spain’s hopes of retaining the title.
But it is hard to see past Spain, given their dominance of the game in the last few years, and a £10 bet on them to win the tournament at bwin.com at the current odds of 3/1 would return £40.
