Republic of Ireland’s impressive defensive record means they are good value for at least a draw against Estonia in Tallinn tomorrow evening.
Giovanni Trapattoni’s men have conceded just once in their last nine games, with the likes of Croatia and Italy having tried and failed to score a goal during this run.
Estonia’s hope rests on their ability to replicate the styles of Russia and Armenia, whose short passing and speedy attackers the Republic had difficulty in dealing with.
This is the theory of Estonia’s goalkeeper Sergei Pareiko, who believes that character will also prove a leveller against what he concedes is a skillful Ireland side.
But while Estonia’s record of having scored at least twice in their final three qualifiers shows that they have the necessary attacking nous to cause the Republic problems, the fact the Boys in Green held on to draw against Russia and only conceded once against surprise packages Armenia suggests they can still record another clean sheet in Tallinn.
This makes a bet on Estonia failing to score an attractive option at 13/10, particularly as Tarmo Ruutli’s side have failed to find the back of the net in half of the games they have played in 2011.
A successful £25 free bet on the Republic of Ireland to keep their ninth clean sheet in ten games would return £57.50, with the free bet available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account.
This points to either a win to nil for Ireland or a 0-0 draw, with the former priced at 11/5 and the latter at 11/2.
It is the latter which looks the most likely, with this having been the final score in three of the Republic’s last five fixtures.
And the scoreline is all the more probable on Friday given Trapattoni’s lack of attacking options.
With Shane Long injured and Kevin Doyle suspended, the no goalscorer option looks tempting at 11/2.
And in bwin’s 3Way football betting market, the draw looks like the best bet at 21/10, with a home win at 12/5 and away success at 6/5.
