Great Britain vs Chile: Team GB too hot for Chile

Kick-off: 0830, 21/07/2021

Stadium: Sapporo Dome

TV: BBC Two

Great Britain are one of the leading medal contenders in the women’s Olympic football and will hope to show why when they begin their campaign against Chile.

England’s run to the World Cup semi-finals two years ago suggests a squad with three players from Scotland and Wales to strengthen it should be capable of reaching the latter stages.

Chile look defensively strong, though, so we’ll go for a Team GB victory and under 2.5 goals at 33/20 as our opening Great Britain vs Chile prediction.

A Look At Great Britain’s Betting Odds

Head coach Hege Riise has plenty of experience in the women’s game and is in charge after Phil Neville stepped down from the role to join Inter Miami.

Riise named an experienced squad which featured five players who also represented Team GB at the London Games in 2012, although goalkeeper Karen Bardsley has since withdrawn due to injury.

England made it to the last four of the World Cup before losing 2-1 to eventual winners the United States so should have no problems advancing from a group which also contains Canada and hosts Japan.

The team may take a while to get going given England have not played a match since the last World Cup due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A 3-0 win in a friendly against New Zealand last week will be Great Britain’s only warm-up match ahead of the Olympics so we’re not expecting too much from Riise’s team.

Looking at the Great Britain vs Chile odds, backing the most goals to be scored in the second half looks a sensible choice at 21/20.

A Look At Chile’s Betting Odds

Chile will be relishing the occasion as they make their debut in the Olympic women’s football tournament.

Women’s football in Chile has enjoyed a huge upturn in fortunes in recent years, including finishing as runners-up at the Copa America in 2018.

They appeared at the Women’s World Cup for the first time last year and have steadily climbed the world rankings so will be determined to give a good account of themselves in Japan.

Chile qualified for the Olympics after beating Cameroon 2-1 on aggregate, playing out a goalless draw in the second leg to get the result they needed.

Two subsequent friendlies ended in a 1-0 defeat against Slovakia and a goalless draw with Germany which adds to the belief that Chile will be well organised but lack firepower.

For our final Great Britain vs Chile prediction, we’re backing a 2-0 win at 4/1.
