Poland might be coming into Euro 2012 as underdogs, but much is expected of star striker Robert Lewandowski, who could yet be good bet for top scorer at 16/1.
The 23-year-old has been in scintillating form for club side Borussia Dortmund, where a haul of 22 goals in 34 league matches helped catapult the team to a second successive Bundesliga title.
Big things are expected of him this summer, too, with the group draw pitting Poland, the lowest Fifa ranked team in the tournament, against the beatable trio of Greece, Russia and Czech Republic.
With qualification from the group the main aim for Poland, much will rest on the abilities of Lewandowksi, who remains their most recognisable goal threat.
But while some have questioned whether the pressure of the occasion may be too much for a player with just 11 goals in 40 games for his country, the striker, himself, remains confident.
“Advancing from the group is the minimum target, but I hope we will be capable of more than that,” he told Reuters in a recent interview.
“I’d like to score a few goals in the tournament .The group is so balanced that any team may win over the other, which only makes it more interesting.”
Lewandowski appears to be hitting top form at just the right time too. Earlier this month, he was the star man for Dortmund in the DFB Pokal Cup final as the Black and Yellows enjoyed a famous 5-2 win over rivals Bayern Munich.
The Polish goalscorer grabbed a memorable hat-trick and the man of the match award to help his side secure the trophy.
Transferring that form to the national side could see Lewandowski add to his tally for Poland, and, if the co-hosts can make it to the knock-out stages, those odds of 16/1 could provide a handsome reward for those backing the Dortmund striker to be Euro 2012 top scorer..
