It is no surprise to see Robin van Persie lead the way in bwin’s anytime goalscorer football betting market for this evening’s friendly game involving England and Holland at Wembley.
The Dutchman has been in scintillating form for club side Arsenal of late, with his curling effort from outside the box against Tottenham on Sunday taking his tally to 23 goals in 26 games in the Premier League this season.
Favourite to score a goal in a game whenever he lines up for the Gunners on the domestic stage, Van Persie understandably has the shortest price to score at any time at Wembley.
Huntelaar has found the back of the net in two of his last three starts on the international stage.
However, punters looking to place a bet could be better off overlooking the 28-year-old’s odds of 6/5 in favour of one of his teammates.
With Holland coach Bert van Marwijk likely to deploy Van Persie on the right side of a front three, it is Klaas-Jan Huntelaar who is set to play as the central striker for the Dutch this evening.
Significantly, the Schalke forward’s record in the Bundesliga is almost as impressive as Van Persie’s in the Premier League, with the former Ajax, Real Madrid and AC Milan hitman grabbing 18 goals in 22 games.
But even more importantly, Huntelaar has found the back of the net in two of his last three starts on the international stage.
Van Persie, on the other hand, has not scored on any of his last six appearances for his country.
A bet on Huntelaar to score at any time therefore looks a good shout at odds of 3/2, with a successful £25 free bet on this outcome set to return £62.50.
Of course, Huntelaar and Van Persie are not Holland’s only options going forward – they can also boast the attacking talents of Dirk Kuyt, Arjen Robben and Wesley Sneijder in their squad.
England, on the other hand, look short of recognised quality at international level, even if several of their younger players look to have the potential to make their mark at the top level.
Indeed, none of the three out-and-out forwards in Stuart Pearce’s squad have scored a goal for their country, with Frazier Campbell yet to win his first cap.
Their top scorer in the squad is Steven Gerrard, who missed out on the captaincy to Scott Parker but could yet be a good bet at 9/4 to grab a goal at any time.
After all, he has a healthy ratio of a goal every five games he plays for England and scored a brace the last time he pulled on a shirt featuring a badge with three lions.
Of the other contenders, Daniel Sturridge stands out – one of Chelsea’s few success stories this season, he has the confidence to replicate his domestic form while playing for his country and the pace, trickery and finishing ability to worry the Holland defence.
He is available at 9/5 to score his first international goal on his second appearance for England.
Recommended bet: Huntelaar to score at any time @ 3/2
