After pulling off the shock result of the first round of Euro 2012 group games with a 1-0 win over World Cup runners-up Holland, Danish confidence will be sky-high and with it will come the belief that they can make it out of the Group of Death.
By contrast, defeat to Germany by the same 1-0 scoreline has Portugal already teetering on the brink of elimination, with a second straight loss likely to see Cristiano Ronaldo and company sent packing.
Despite that, the Euro 2004 runners-up remain 91/100 favourites in bwin’s 3Way football betting market, with a second Denmark surprise 31/10 and the draw 12/5.
But it’s not just their win over Holland that will give Morten Olsen’s side confidence they can pull off a second upset – even before the tournament, he will have earmarked the Portugal game as winnable, as I suggested when forecasting the Danes to pick up four points from their three games.
After all, Denmark moved ahead of Paulo Bento’s team in the FIFA world rankings (Denmark are 9th, Portugal 10th) after beating them to top spot in Euro 2012 Qualifying Group H.
More importantly, they did it by triumphing 2-1 in the winner-takes-all final game against the Portuguese and it’s 12/1 for a repeat of that result.
New customers using the free £25 bet they receive when registering with bwin would win £325 if the Danes upset the odds once again by this scoreline.
At the heart of both of their big wins against Portugal and Holland was Denmark’s strong defence and with Liverpool’s Daniel Agger and Roma’s Simon Kjaer again showing the understanding that saw them keep five clean sheets in qualifying, it’s worth backing another Danish shut-out at 11/4.
Equally important has been getting off to fast starts, with Michael Krohn-Delhi striking early in both those games and it’s 8/5 for them to open the scoring for the seventh straight competitive match and 5/2 for that to be in the first half.
Yet with the likes of Ronaldo, Nani and Helder Postiga around, maybe it won’t be all plain sailing for the Danes to pick up another victory, so it’s also worth covering a Portuguese second-half comeback and Denmark/Draw is 15/1.
Recommended bet: Denmark to score first @ 8/5
Outside punt: Denmark to beat Portugal @ 31/10
