One Hot Minute: England Women vs Spain Women

We’re continuing our focus on the UEFA Women’s Championship for the bwin predictor competition this week and the England Women vs Spain Women group game is an obvious choice.

Just like last week we’ve looked back over every game in this competition involving one of these two teams – including qualifiers – back to its 2005 incarnation to work out when the opening goal is likely to be scored.

If recent history is any guide then we could well see the net bulge early on here. These two sides have experienced plenty of fast starts, with half of all deadlocks in their matches having been broken within the first 18 minutes of play. This suggests that an opening goal in the first 20 minutes is pretty likely, although the 26 to 30-minute interval has also seen the first goal scored fairly often.

For those expecting a slower start, bear in mind that fewer than one in five opening goals in this period has arrived after half-time. If you’re set on backing a second-half breakthrough then perhaps the 50th minute is the place to start, with five of the 12 openers netted after the interval coming in the 10 minutes before the hour mark.

The individual performances of these two teams in more recent games also provide some clues. If you fancy England to break the deadlock then perhaps it pays to estimate conservatively, with their average opening goal converted relatively late – in the 37th minute – during their last 20 competitive internationals.

Spain have been far quicker off the mark in their recent outings, netting their average opener on the 28-minute mark, but if you’re not convinced that they can unsettle England then you shouldn’t be afraid of making a late guess.

Mark Sampson’s side have netted five opening goals in the final half an hour during their last 20 competitive fixtures, so look equipped to grind down even a well-organised opponent.
