Chesterfield and Tranmere might both be priced at 3/2 to win their Johnstone’s Paint Trophy encounter at the b2net Stadium, but Rovers’ recent hoodoo over the Spireites makes an away win something of a no brainer.
Tranmere have won the last six meetings between the two teams, including a 1-0 victory in the league at Prenton Park in August.
And with Tranmere in much better form than struggling Chesterfield, a bet on Les Parry’s team making it through to the next round at 17/20 looks to be a safe one.
Admittedly, Rovers have stumbled of late, with their last two matches ending in a 4-2 loss away to Scunthorpe and a 0-0 draw at home to Colchester.
However, prior to that they had put together a run of four wins in a row and had gone six games unbeaten, with this latter sequence including a 1-1 draw with League One leaders Charlton.
On the back of this, Tranmere have risen to eighth place in the league while Chesterfield are languishing in the relegation zone.
The Spireites have not won any of their last six games following a Johnstone’s Paint Trophy success over Notts County, while their winless run in the league stretches back to a 4-1 win over Carlisle on 17th September.
All this points to a win for Tranmere, with a draw at 11/5 seemingly the best Chesterfield can hope for.
But with Tranmere boasting the third-best defence in League One and Chesterfield hardly prolific in front of goal – they have scored 21 goals in 17 league matches so far this season – even a draw appears beyond John Sheridan’s men.
As such, bet on Tranmere’s defence to prevail and for Rovers to win a low-scoring match.
More games involving Tranmere have featured under 2.5 goals than is the case for any other team in League One bar Walsall, with 12 out of their 17 matches ending this way.
As such, a bet on there to be fewer than three goals at 17/20 looks a good option.
And with Chesterfield having the fourth-worst half time home record in the league, another potential bet to consider is Tranmere to be winning at half time and full time.
At odds of 16/5, a successful £25 free bet on a Tranmere/Tranmere result at half time/full time would return £105, with the free bet available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account.
