Tuesday’s 4-1 loss at home to Sunderland was just another horrible turn in the bumpy road that has been Wigan Athletic’s season.
Since going undefeated in their first three games of the campaign, things have gone downhill at the DW Stadium. Wigan ended their encouraging start when they were beaten at Manchester City and suffered League Cup elimination at the hands of Crystal Palace three days later, losing 2-1.
However, with the exception of the 5-0 thrashing they received from Manchester United at Old Trafford, Wigan have actually taken seven out of nine points from their most recent three away games.
Therefore, the other domestic cup should provide boss Roberto Martinez with a welcome break from the struggle of England’s top flight as his Wigan team travel to Swindon, where they are priced at 27/20 to win inside 90 minutes.
And given their progression to the fourth round in both of the last two seasons, a tie against the League Two outfit should allow them to make it three in a row.
Swindon will be no walkover, however. They are currently fourth in League Two and boast the best defence in that division, conceding just 19 times in 24 games.
The Robins will be buoyed by the fact that they take on the lowest scorers in the Premier League – Wigan have just 16 goals this term – and will feel their defence could well be a match for the visitors this Saturday.
The home side are given odds of 39/20 to knock Wigan out on Saturday, while odds of 9/4 are on offer for the tie to go to a replay.
That top defence has earned Swindon three home wins to nil in a row and if they are to cause an upset in round three then it could well be another win with a clean sheet.
The odds on that occurring are 4/1, meaning new customers who use their free £25 bet for joining bwin.com on that scenario would win £125 if Wigan do indeed get dumped out without even scoring a goal.
