With only two defeats in their last 11 ties, Stoke City have certainly established themselves as FA Cup specialists in the past couple of seasons.
But form often goes out of the window when it comes to local skirmishes and a fourth-round tie against Derby County at Pride Park provides the Rams with a rare opportunity to get one over their near neighbours.
This will be the first A50 derby since 2008 and though it may not have the intensity of Stoke v Port Vale or Derby v Forest, there’s still clear animosity between the sides, particularly given the Potters’ recent successes.
While Tony Pulis’ men are enjoying their first-ever Europa League campaign and continue to thrive in the Premier League, currently sitting eighth, Derby are eleventh in the Championship on the back of one away win in nine.
As such, the visitors are favourites in bwin’s 3Way football betting market at 23/20, with odds of 23/10 for Derby to pull off the upset and the same price of 23/10 for the game to go to a replay.
Stoke often finish strongly – they’ve scored 13 goals in the final 15 minutes of their league games thus far – and odds of 4/5 on them to score last offer the chance for another short-priced punt which should come in.
Much of Stoke’s success has been built on a solid rearguard, with England internationals Jonathan Woodgate and Matthew Upson helping them to seven wins in games with under 2.5 goals – and it’s 7/2 for them to get another low-scoring win at Pride Park.
New customers using the free £25 bet they receive when registering with bwin would win £112.50 if Stoke were to win a game of under 2.5 combined goals.
Pulis will especially fancy his side’s chances of keeping the score down against Nigel Clough’s team, who’ve averaged just 1.1 goals per game this season, making a Stoke win to nil also good value at 5/2.
Stoke aren’t exactly prolific away from home either, scoring one goal or less on nine occasions this term, so it’s a safe bet that there’ll be under 2.5 goals (available at 3/4) whatever the outcome.
However, Stoke often finish strongly – they’ve scored 13 goals in the final 15 minutes of their league games thus far – and odds of 4/5 on them to score last offer the chance for another short-priced punt which should come in.
