Liverpool’s goal hero Dirk Kuyt might have only picked up his first medal as a Reds player in yesterday’s Carling Cup final against Cardiff but he is already hungry for more success.
The Dutchman scored Liverpool’s equaliser to take the game into extra time and then converted a penalty in the shoot-out.
However, while still basking in the glow of cup glory he turned his attention to another competition in which Liverpool have a good chance of victory.
Far from a statement of intent, Liverpool’s Carling Cup victory may have merely served to encourage the likes of Spurs and Chelsea in their pursuit of the FA Cup.
“We wanted this so desperately,” he commented.
“This is why I came to Anfield. To get my first medal is great. Hopefully we can get one more [in the FA Cup].”
The good news for Kuyt is that Liverpool are joint-favourites for the FA Cup at 5/2 along with Tottenham, which means a £25 free bet on them to lift their second trophy of the year would return £87.50 if it proves successful.
They are also well-fancied to make it past next opponents Stoke and book a place in the semi-finals.
Kenny Dalglish’s side are priced at 7/20 to beat the Potters at Anfield on March 17th, leaving the draw at 3/1 and a Stoke success at 8/1 in bwin’s 3Way football betting market.
The only trouble is that Liverpool’s performance against Cardiff will hardly have filled their supporters with confidence.
While they had 45 efforts on goal during the match – an average of one shot every 2 minutes 40 seconds – at no time did a goal seem inevitable.
Indeed, instead of putting in the type of performance which suggested that Liverpool are on the cusp of a new era of domination, the Reds only reminded viewers why they have drawn eight of their 12 home games this season and dropped points against the likes of Blackburn, Norwich and Swansea.
So far from a statement of intent, it could be that Liverpool’s Carling Cup victory has merely served to encourage the likes of Spurs and Chelsea in their pursuit of the FA Cup.
As such, Kuyt may just have to content himself with a single winners’ medal this season.
