Oxford United famously won the League Cup in 1986, but their chances of a cup run this season look slim having been handed a tricky FA Cup first round tie away to Sheffield United.
Knocked out of the Carling Cup by Cardiff at the first opportunity and having lost to Southend in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy on Tuesday evening, today’s game with the Blades represents the Us’ last chance of marking the 25th anniversary of their Wembley success with another cup run.
But with Sheffield United being one of the form teams of League One, the division above Oxford, they look set to exit a second cup competition in the space of a week.
Danny Wilson’s side have lost just one of their last six league games and sit fifth in the league, helped in no small part by their excellent goalscoring record.
Only Charlton and Huddersfield have scored more than the Blades in League One, which has helped to make up for the Steel City side’s slightly suspect defence.
This is particularly the case at home, where Sheffield United have scored an impressive 20 goals in nine matches but also conceded 14.
And with both teams scoring in all of the Blades’ last eight games, this points to both teams getting on the scoresheet today at 13/20.
But even allowing for their propensity to concede goals, Sheffield United look the best bets in bwin’s 3Way football betting market.
Their goalscoring record this season suggests they have more than enough to overpower lower-division opponents, as indicated by their odds of 53/100 to win in normal time.
This leaves an upset in 90 minutes for Oxford priced at 17/4, with a draw at 29/10.
To secure more attractive returns, punters could consider betting on a draw/Sheffield United win in the half time/full time market.
This is because, at home, the Blades have scored almost double the number of goals after the interval than they have before the break, suggesting they are well placed to move clear of Oxford in the second period.
