The last time French club Rennes faced a Scottish side was back in 1971, when they took on Rangers in the first round of the Cup Winners’ Cup.
A 1-0 defeat in Glasgow and 1-1 draw in France meant Rennes made an early exit after the two legs, while Rangers went on to win the competition.
But fast forward 40 years and Rennes are unlikely to suffer disappointment against Celtic, their Scottish opponents in the Europa League tomorrow.
It would be nothing short of a miracle if Celtic, the only Scottish club left in European club competition, were to reach the final of the Europa League this year.
Indeed, they are lucky to be in the competition at all having only reached the group stage after their opponents in the play-offs, FC Sion, were excluded from the competition for fielding ineligible players.
And while Neil Lennon’s men secured a highly credible 1-1 draw against Udinese at Celtic Park on matchday two, their away form is a particular cause for concern.
If their 3-1 defeat to Sion to Switzerland is factored in, Celtic have not won on their travels in seven European matches, with this sequence including five defeats.
With Rennes unbeaten in their last eight home European games, the French side are understandably heavy favourites to win the game at 31/50, with a draw at 27/10 and Celtic success at 9/2.
In fact, their superiority is likely to stretch to a win to nil, with Rennes having kept clean sheets in six of their last eight home European ties.
With this in mind, odds of 23/20 on Rennes to keep a clean sheet are worth taking advantage of, as are those of 31/20 on the home team to win without conceding.
A successful £25 free bet on Rennes to beat Celtic without allowing the Glasgow side to score would return £63.75, with the free bet available to new customers who sign up for a bwin account.
One final fact to consider is that Celtic have not scored first in either of their last two matches, while Rennes have scored first in nine of their last ten.
Rennes to make the breakthrough is therefore worth considering as a banker at 12/25.
