While the Europa League may contain a wide variety of teams, when it comes to betting, I like to see things in black and white with Newcastle United, Rosenborg and Partizan Belgrade my tips to win this week.
All three teams may play in similar monochrome-inspired strips, but they also share another important likeness – offering excellent odds upon which I will be using the winnings from my 4/1 treble last night in the Capital One Cup.
With bwin’s ‘Home Heroes’ series designed to offer three top tips to back for a home team banker treble, these three sides head into their respective return legs with everything to play for, meaning there should be no nasty surprises once the team sheets arrive.
Okay, so Newcastle may make a few changes but the Magpies have a strong enough squad to convert a 1-1 first-leg draw against Greek side Atromitos, as well as being eager to win and kick start a new adventure in Europe,
Rosenborg look similarly well-placed heading into their return game with Legia Warsaw, having secured a 1-1 draw in the first leg, while Partizan will be confident of overturning a 3-2 first-leg deficit against Tromso following a battling display in Scandinavia.
The trio are available at just over 4/1 for anyone seeking a treble. It could be the perfect punt to make use of bwin’s free £20 bet for registering too, with returns of £83.78 available.
Read on to find out why you should back our latest three selections to make it a black-and-white Thursday.
Partizan Belgrade to beat Tromso @ 3/4
Partizan may have suffered a defeat to Tromso last week, but the Serbian champions will be confident of turning the tie around in Belgrade following Aleksandr Mitrovic’s late goal in Norway, which saw the visitors leave with a 3-2 loss but two crucial away goals.
The club nicknamed ‘The Steamroller’ have flattened both their league opponents at the Partizan Stadium so far this season, scoring eight goals in the process and conceding none. In fact, the Serbs have lost just two of their last 25 Super Liga games at home.
The Norwegians come into the game on the back of some poor form on the road too, with just one win in their last nine league games away from home.
With few fans likely to have made the long trip to the intimidating Belgrade setting, the hosts look good for a win and are well priced at 3/4.
Rosenborg to beat Legia Warsaw at 83/100
A fixture of the Champions League in previous years, Rosenborg have had to make do with the Europa League in recent times and will expect to reach the group stages at the expense of Legia Warsaw.
They head into the return game as favourites after Borek Dockal’s 80th-minute equaliser in Poland gave them a precious away goal advantage. The draw saw Rosenborg extend an impressive recent run which has seen them go 15 games unbeaten in all competitions.
The affectionately nicknamed ‘Troll Kids’ are also currently ten league games unbeaten at the Lerkendal Stadium in Trondheim.
In contrast, Legia Warsaw have proven shaky on the road, winning just two of their last seven away games, and they could struggle to cope with a visit to the colder climes of Norway this week.
With odds of 83/100 on a Rosenborg win, a victory for the home side looks a good punt.
Newcastle to beat Atromitos @ 7/25
Alan Pardew may have fielded an experimental line-up for the first leg of Newcastle’s encounter with Atromitos, but the return at St James’ Park should be a slightly different affair.
The Magpies boss is eager to progress to the next round of the competition and has already targeted a home win, telling reporters that his charges “have got to win the game” rather than play for the goalless draw which would see them advance.
Newcastle have only lost once at home in 2012, with that single defeat coming against Premier League champions Manchester City, and they should be confident of victory.
Pardew’s team have already shown their abilities at St James’ Park with an impressive win against Tottenham Hotspur on the opening day of the season and with the Europa League representing a realistic ambition for the north-east club, midweek glory nights could soon be returning to Tyneside.
Heavy favourites at 7/25 for a home win, Newcastle could be the team to complete a tasty treble.
