Premier League Newcastle travel to Portugal to play Marítimo in the Europa League on Thursday in search of a victory to get their European campaign underway.
Maritimo are the 23/20 favourites on the Bwin 3-way market, the draw is 11/5 and Newcastle are priced up as an 12/5 shot.
The news out of the Newcastle camp is that Papiss Cisse and Demba Ba will miss out, so it could be that Alan Pardew will not play his strongest side: not that he will have much choice given their torrid list of injuries, which includes captain Fabricio Coloccini and goalkeeper Tim Krul.
A thrilling 2-2 draw against Everton on Monday night doesn’t tell the full story of the match, where Everton should have been out of sight by half time and the Blues have two perfectly good goals ruled out in the second half. However, Newcastle improved after the break and will be looking to pick up a win here, despite limping to a draw in their previous European away match.
Maritimo have started their domestic season with one win and two draws and have drawn four of their last five at home, scoring just three goals. They made it through to the Europa League proper via two qualifying rounds in which they managed four goals, conceding just twice.
The home side’s last ten games in all competitions have seen less than three goals scored so an obvious way in here would be to back under 2.5 goals at odds of 13/20 but that price would only see you pick up a £13 profit from your free £20 from bwin so we will look elsewhere for some more value.
Newcastle’s qualification round for this competition against Atromitos ended 1-1 and 1-0 and we expect a close game here to keep that trend going, under 1.5 goals to be scored looks a decent option at 39/20 but we are going to push the boat out slightly and go for the ultimate bore-draw and back a 0-0 result at 25/4.
Maritimo are guaranteed to keep it tight at the back against their apparent superior opponents but Newcastle’s injuries worries will probably see the match starved of goals all together.
